Since the entry into force of the bilateral agreements in June 2002, the work place principle also applies to the health insurance. This means that pensioners are insured in the country where they work or used to work. Some people benefit from the right to opt and can be freed from the obligation to be insured in Switzerland if they prove to be insured in their country of residence.

In an EU or EFTA state resident beneficiaries of a Swiss pension and their family members have to apply for the form E 121 from the Swiss health insurance.
This insurer completes the sections regarding health insurance and then forwards the form to the Swiss Compensation Office, who completes the sections concerning old age and survivors' insurance.
If the beneficiari do not have Swiss health insurance anymore, it can contact the liaison office in charge (LaMal).
This office will send it a list with addresses from all the Swiss health insurances which offer the possibility to cover a resident in an EU or EFTA state.
